Chochin and Izakaya Lantern Buyer Guide for Importers

Translate a restaurant, hospitality or event concept into a clear lantern specification without confusing traditional craft terminology with modern commercial products.

Japanese-style restaurant lanterns used as a commercial entrance display

What Chochin means in a sourcing conversation

Traditional Japanese Chochin are collapsible lanterns historically made by fixing washi paper to a thin bamboo framework. Japanese government references describe their use at festivals and outside izakaya bars, while official traditional-craft material also documents paper or silk, bamboo framing, decoration, pasting and finishing processes.

A modern export request may use the word Chochin more broadly for a Japanese-style ribbed restaurant lantern. Tokicraft commercial projects can use paper-like surfaces, lightweight fabric or PVC with a wire frame. These products should not be described as Japanese-made washi craft or a designated traditional craft unless the actual origin, materials and documentation support that claim.

Start with the application, not only the shape

Izakaya or restaurant entrance

Prioritize readable store text, viewing direction, hanging height, optional lighting and the exposure conditions around the entrance.

Indoor dining and hospitality

Confirm ceiling height, sight lines, quantity, spacing, light color and whether the lantern is a sign, a decorative shade or both.

Festival and temporary event

Plan the color sequence, hanging layout, installation duration, packing by zone and whether the lanterns will be reused after the event.

Retail or branded display

Treat logo scale, repeat color, visible print area, photography and individual presentation packing as part of the product specification.

Artwork decisions before sampling

  • Send editable vector artwork where possible and identify any font or brush-lettering file that must be preserved.
  • State whether the design is one-sided, repeated around the lantern or intended to face a specific approach direction.
  • Confirm the finished lantern size before fixing logo dimensions and print position.
  • Provide an agreed color reference when brand color is important; screen appearance alone is not a production standard.
  • Confirm that the buyer owns or is authorized to use logos, characters, fonts and other supplied artwork.

Lighting, installation and exposure are separate checks

A decorative lantern shade is not automatically a complete electrical product. The quotation should identify whether a light source, cord, plug, holder or hanging part is included. Voltage, plug, certification and installation requirements depend on the destination and must be confirmed in writing.

The buyer and a qualified local installer remain responsible for site measurements, fixing points, load, clearance, electrical work and local rules. For an entrance or outdoor-adjacent location, provide roof coverage, rain, wind, sunlight, temperature and intended duration. Do not rely on a generic waterproof claim.

Information needed for a useful quotation

  • Destination country and intended use
  • Installation location photo, viewing direction and available space
  • Preferred shape, finished diameter, height and quantity
  • Surface material direction, colors and artwork files
  • Lighting, hanging parts and destination electrical requirements
  • Packing, labeling, shipment timing and delivery destination

Frequently asked questions

Is every Japanese-style restaurant lantern a traditional Chochin?

No. Chochin is a useful style and cultural term, but materials, origin and production methods vary. Confirm whether the order is traditional paper craft, a paper-like decorative lantern, fabric or PVC.

Can an izakaya name or logo be printed on the lantern?

Yes, subject to artwork review, print area, material, shape and sample approval. The buyer must have permission to use the supplied artwork.

Can the lantern be supplied with a light?

Lighting can be reviewed as an option. Included components, voltage, plug, certification and installation responsibility must be confirmed for the destination.

Can a restaurant lantern be used outside?

Do not decide from the product name alone. Send the location, roof coverage, rain, wind, sunlight, temperature and installation duration so the material and limitations can be reviewed.
